US Chapters must file Tax Forms

The requirements that the IRS is going to make all BLUE KNIGHTS chapters adhere to in the upcoming tax seasons. That is the e-postcards (Form 990N). All chapters who make $25,000.00 or less will be required to file the e-postcard (even if your chapter didn’t make a dime). But even if your chapter didn’t raise a nickel in fund raising activities, every chapter made money through their dues. So, for all those chapters that have made $25,000.00 or less, the e-postcard system is now up and running and you must file with the Internal Revenue System (IRS) or risk losing your chapter’s 501 (c) 10 tax exempt status. Those chapters that fail to file for 3 years will lose their tax exempt status. That is not “maybe” you will lose the 501 (c) 10 Tax Exempt Status. That is “you will lose that status.” And when that happens, your chapter will have to go through the process of re-filing for the tax exempt status they did not need to lose in the first place. The e-postcard must be filed by the 15th day of the fifth month after the close of your chapter’s tax year. This filing is done electronically, through the Internet. There is no paperwork and the IRS will not accept a hardcopy of the e-postcard through the mail. THE E-POSTCARD MUST BE FILED ELECTRONICALLY. Filing the e-postcard is not that hard to do. The first thing you need to know is did your Chapter make $25,000.00 or less for the tax season (your chapters fiscal year)? If your Chapter made more than $25,000.00 during its tax year, then you cannot file the e-post card. You will have to file your regular tax forms. The second thing your chapter will need to decide on is when your Chapter’s tax year begins and ends. The third item your chapter will need to have is the Employer Identification Number (EIN). If you do not know this number, your bank should have this information on file. You can also contact the IRS at 800-829-4933 and ask them to find your Chapters EIN. The fourth item you will need is the name of your organization (in other words the name your Chapter goes by). You will also need its address. The fifth item you will need is the name and address of the Chapter’s principal officer (President). A sixth item you will need for the e-postcard is your chapter’s website address if your chapter has one. Okay, you have all of this information. What do you do next? Now you need to go to the IRS website at http://www.irs.gov/charities/article/0,,id=169250,00.html and, once you are in that website, click on “Here” in the “How to file” box. That will take you to a new page where you will click on “Leave IRS Site.” That takes you to a new page where you will click on “Register as a New User.” That will put you on a new page where you will start the process of getting a password and login ID number. Just follow the instructions. Once you have completed the process of applying for the User ID and Password, you will be sent an e-mail that will allow you to activate your login ID and then allow you to fill out your e-postcard. You should printout the information as you go along and save it for your Chapter’s records. Anyone in your Chapter can be authorized to file this e-postcard for the Chapter, probably the Treasurer is best. It should be someone who is not intimidated by the computer or following the instructions on the websites they will be visiting. It is not a hard process, but all BLUE KNIGHTS Chapters must file the e-postcard (990-N) if they made $25,000.00 or less during their tax year. Those Chapters making over $25,000.00 will continue to file form 990 or 990-EZ. What it comes down to is that all US Chapters of the BLUE KNIGHTS will be filing one form or another.
